wish my position to be clearly
understood. The highest ideal
in life is the Christian ideal
of altruism. The young man
or young woman who is taught
to think of himself only, of his own
ease and pleasure first is
being trained to a selfish,
narrow view of life.
Patriotism is an instinct
native to every people.
It is one of the most elemental
of our emotions, as has been
many times disclosed in the
course of the present war.Some one had predicted that the
socialists who are in theory
opposed to war would refuse to
answer their country's call
and so make war impossible,
but nothing of the kind has
