I doubt whether we need even
the Swiss system, but we
certainly should be spared
from the other.
3. Now it naturally
follows that if the country is
to be defended, men must be
ready to defend it and this
is the kernel of my remarks
this morning. Our boys must
be taught that the defense of
their country may become
their first duty and that when
it does only a coward will
shirk this duty. This is one
aspect of patriotism. During
the Spanish-American war,
where we all followed so
keenly the progress of our
army and navy, a high
school lad was asked to
