3. Patriotism means
service and calls for
sacrifice in the defense of ones country even if necessary the
sacrifice of life.
To the first principle that
war is an abnormal condition,
I shall devote but
little time. It is not necessary
to enter into an invective
against war. War is its own
condemnation. We have
a daily lesson in the horrors
of war in the press dispatches
from Europe. War is but
a survival of the brute in
man. Animals know no
other way to settle disputes
than by force. We think nothing
