war is the direct outcome of the
preparedness for war which the
nations of Europe have practiced
for the past generation and
on the other hand that nothing
save preparedness will protect
our own country from a
fate like Belgium's. One person
says Americans should keep off
the high seas during the war
another that we should maintain
the rights of neutrals on the
ocean and should even
fight for them. Secretary
Garrison tells us that the most
effective way to protect our
country is by giving military
instruction in the public schools.
Our own state Supt. Keeler, and school teachers generally, deprecates
this suggestion as tending
toward the militaristic spirit.
