But why is it that the world
seems lost in the face of the
present war? War is nothing
new. It is the oldest of institutions.
It has been always
with us. Hardly a year has
elapsed but what somewhere
on the earth nations have been
at war. Even within our
own lifetimes and memories
have occurred the Spanish-
American War, the Boer War,
and the Russo-Japanese War.
The reasons for the seeming
hopelessness of the present situation
are as follows: 1. The
magnitude of the war operations,
as to numbers of men engaged
and as to the destructiveness
of the weapons used 2. But
