16th Nov
Dull morning but it turned out a nice day. About 4 p.m. enemy commenced
shelling Hill 60 also our lines- shells flying all round some dropped too
close for me to feel comfortable. Some of Herefords hit - one man killed.
Our guns started at 5 p.m. and at 5.30 you could not see the foot of 'Sari
Bair' for smoke in fact some thought it was a gas attack. Very strong smell
of powder in our trench quite enough to suffocate. Now 6.10 p.m. only usual
snipers. A bullet last night found its way through roof of Arm Sgts, dug
out- 2 dugouts away.
17th Nov
Nice morning- usual firing all night especially 2.30 to 3 a.m. Wind blew
like a gale for about 5 hours- rained very hard. Lots of firing on the
right about 7 p.m. till 8 p.m. fancy our chaps trying to push up a
barricade on the right (54th division). Turned very cold. Major B
(Borthwick) sent to Hospital Ship.
18th Nov
Nice morning but very cold after the rain. Posted long letter to Lizzie.
Usual gun firing, trench motars and rifle fire. Heavy firing during night
from our trenches.
19th Nov
Nice morning not so cold. Posted long letter to Lizzie. Rumor last night
that enemy were making a mine near Depray Cop-our fellows starting a
counter mine tonight (miners from 'A' Coy to do the work). Met Taylor 11
a.m. about conveying rations on donkeys. They start tonight and most rotten
arrangement at present . Went to see Sgt. Moreland at Regimental Dump 2.45
p.m. - long walk- plenty of shells flying about. Left H.Q. for Ration Dump
to see how donkeys managed. Took servant and 6 men for loading up. Rotten
idea the donkeys. Not had clothes and boots off for 4 nights- not quite
safe to undress.
20th Nov
Very nasty cold day- moved from Beggars Bush to Oaktree Gap- rotten
dugout. Got some sheets over but only temporary, not at all comfy. Out till
11 p.m. getting rations up. Not much firing during night. No rum in mess,
C.O. asked for some.
21st Nov. Sunday
Very cold day looks like rain, wind blowing hard all night and today.
Very busy. Four H.E. shells dropped near my last dugout today and I believe
quite shattered the place. Letter to Lizzie. Very cold night and a little
rain.
