22nd Oct.
Awful night-blowing a gale all through ( night ). Continued during the day
- started raining at 4 p.m. and had not ceased when I retired. Enemy
shelled mule parks at 7.15 p.m. Tonight we had 30 mules- it was an awful
job roping and loading them. Started letter for Lizzie. Went to bed at 10.
Reading until 11 p.m.
23rd Oct.
Awful rough windy night. At 3 a.m. three G.I. (galvanized iron) sheets
were blown off roof of my dug out. Got up to put matters right but found I
could not manage the job myself so turned into bed again until 7 a.m
Awfully cold and windy. No firing much, sent letter to Lizzie.
24th Oct. Sunday
No improvement in the weather- spent most of my time in dugout- feet cold
all day and feel generally miserable I suppose through the weather-hardly
despatch. Also one to Mrs Phillips. Sent cig. case and soap box to Mrs P.
yesterday. Weather changed about 6 p.m. Wind dropped. Turks shelled at 7
p.m. dropped them in the sea about 100 + (yds?) from us at Supply Deopt.
25th Oct.
Grand morning just like May in England. Flocks of wild geese (migrating)
fly over the camp daily from towards Bulgaria and appear to be making
towards Lemnos. Plenty of aeroplanes out this morning - all ours. Lt. Home
and Vickers 8th Welsh Fusiliers came to see me- told me about poor Bill
Hills death- while bombing fish at Lala Baba about a fortnight ago. Night
very cold. Usual straffe all day. Guns (on) boat in gulf of Saros commenced
shelling 'Pimple' at 6.50 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. Guns on right of our ridges
shelled same place at 8.45 p.m.
26th Oct.
Dull morning - south westerly wind. 10 a.m. enemy shelled our position 3
killed 1 wounded all of our 6th Battalion in Borthwick's dugout- 1 shrapnel bullet made a hole in
the roof of it, but touched no-one. One bullet went through the top of our
mess room which I have kept. Shelling ceased about 11 a.m. A little rain
between 3 and 4 p.m. J.E. Parry and Brookes joined us. Bean also came to
1/6 R.W.F. Went for a walk around Oxford Street, Park Lane etc. at 6 p.m.
and came to barbed wire and guns on return journey. Sent letter to Lizzie.
27th Oct.
Fine day and very quiet, no shelling on our camp.
