8th Sept.

Battalion went to trenches this evening about 8 p.m. I had tea with them at

5 p.m. , K Roberts and E. Roberts I was told had been sent away to hospital

ship. Only leaves the following here:- Borthwick (Captain) , Jefferson

(Captain), Taylor (Captain) , Bate (Sec. Lt.), Jenkins (Sec. Lt.), Dealtry

(Sec. Lt.), W. Horner (Sec. Lt.)  J. Horner (Sec. Lt.) , Alexander (Lt.),

Morgan (Doctor?), Claridge (Lt. Qm.), Kenny (Sec.Lt.) who has not been to

the trenches during Battalion's last two visits. Why? It's hard to say,

Usual shelling all day some dropped in our camp, one man wounded.

9th Sept.

Nothing unusual to note today. 4 p.m. Two of our aircraft just passed over

towards Turks lines. One of the Turks big guns which has pitched 'Jack

Johnsons' into us since we first landed was knocked out today by our guns

which got 4 direct hits on to it. 4 Mules killed, 7 wounded.

10th Sept.

Nothing unusual. Turks very busy all day shelling. Little damage. Dead

mules towed out and buried at sea. Did not sleep well somehow.

11th Sept.

8 a.m. Shelled - one fell 10 yards to left of my dugout ( in front of

Ellis's 4th Cheshires ). No damage. Turks kept it up for a good while, but

have been quiet since then. Nothing of importance up to 6 p.m. Received 2

letters from home also one from Manfield.

12th Sept. Sunday.

Turks bombarded us heavily from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. One or two wounded near

our camp/ Started again at 11 a.m. Shrapnel falling all around us. Have

pictured my household this Sunday morning. Makes me feel as if I want to be

there.

13th Sept.

Shelled heavily from 9 a.m. as usual- no damage much to our camp. A.S.C.

moved to new dumping ground. Very cold at night from about 7.30 p.m.

14th Sept.

Could not make out what was up with Turks gunners as no shells landed here

today. Heard that our gunners had knocked out 4 of the enemy's guns during

yesterday. Great joy amongst our troops who could see Turks carrying away.

their dead and wounded from their gun emplacements. Went to West Beach to

buy stores from Bumboat, with Armstrong, Bought 8 eggs; 1/--, Box Turkish

Delight: 6d, 2 Sardines: 9d each, Total 3/--, Paid S, 2/3d I owed him. Quite a

nice pleasant day but it had been chilly all day long.
