1st Sept. 1915
Still a little 'seedy' with pains in the stomach. Wrote a long letter home.
Attack made on the left flank close to our dugouts. Started 7.25 p.m.
finished about 9 p.m. Shall never forget it.
2nd Sept.
Has nasty pains in the stomach all day. Took 4 B.P. No sleep. Nothing to
note of much consequence.
3rd Sept
Wrote a long letter home also one to Rice's . Nothing unusual except got a
mule shot in shoulder near ration dump.
4th Sept.
Battalion came from trenches to rest camp for rest, arrived about 12
midnight. Nothing unusual occurred. Usual shelling.
5th Sept. Sunday.
Had good nights rest- the B, pills seem to have out me right. Went to
Battalion's rest camp 6.30 a.m. issued grub. Saw to several other things
(sanitary) found nearly all the officers and men as fast asleep as a church
-don't look so bad as last time when they came down for rest. Went over
again about 10.30 a.m. Had a chat with all officers. Dining there at 6 p.m.
tonight. They say today's Sunday- the Turks shelled ridge south of our
camp, commencing about 5 a.m. Our guns replied with heavy fire for about an
hour- earth fairly shook. Not at all a peaceful day - shells falling all
around, doesn't seem safe anywhere. Karl Roberts not well- looks very
haggard and worn, went to hospital today also Elford Roberts.
9 p.m. Both sides seem very quiet, although there are lots of gun flashes
from Achi Baba and enemy continually drop star shells above out main
position (ridge) but scarcely fire. Shelled from 7.30 to 5 a.m. landing
beach. Received two letters and two bundles of papers.
6th Sept.
Very quiet day about base camp- shells from enemy fell rather thick for a
short time this morning and evening- not much harm done as usual, got 2
eggs per man from A.S.C.
7th Sept.
Wrote letter to wife in answer to those I got on 6th. 11.15 a.m. Shells
falling around our camp at time of writing this. Day passed quietly. Usual
shells at intervals . Wrote Florence Troughton.
