21st Aug.
Previous to this, supplies had been drawn in full view of the enemy who
always shelled us. Now they are drawn and loaded in the dark. Sergeant
Halmen Williams- Acting Quartermaster of 1st Herefords went to hospital,
poor chap lost his sense, probably through the episode of yesterday. He
was with me and Armstrong when it occurred. He did not remember his name or
what his Regiment was. Heavy bombardment and attack 2.30 to 7.30 p.m. Did
not improve our position.
22nd/23rd Aug. Sun/Mon.
Nothing much occurred except usual shelling.
24th Aug
Battalion came from trenches. Busy making arrangements to feed them well.
Shelling all day as usual.
25th Aug.
Battalion came from trenches last night for a rest- pleased to see them
what remains- all looked very thin, weak and harrassed. Fed them as well
as I could with supplies at my disposal. Borthwick and Taylor looked the
best among the officers.
26th Aug.
Details camp shelled as usual. No casualties among our men.
27th Aug.
No entry for this day.
28th Aug.
Battalion went out to line trenches again- relieved 159th Brigade. Nothing
of any special note took place.
29th Aug. Sunday
Felt 'seedy' . Nothing of much importance occurred.
30th Aug.
Felt 'seedy'-stomach trouble. Nothing extra to relate.
31st Aug.
Still a little 'seedy' with pains in the stomach. Nothing extra to relate.
I wish we had a doctor in the camp.
