Dog Biscuits and Bully Beef
1
Although poorly educated, I was self opinionated,
Words of wisdom from experienced friends and relatives I disdained.
In my immature condition, I considered that tuition,
Was an unnecessary burden, which could not be entertained.
2
With ambition for to travel, mysterious theories to unravel,
The old proverb disregarded, I had leaped before I'd seen.
So without consideration of the dangerous situation.
I joined His Majesty's forces,in the year 1915.
3
Some months of preparation, abused to desperation,
By Sergeant Major's, most of them, unmitigated spawn.
They informed us serenely, if we didn't act more keenly.
Our end sanguine and premature, would herald in the dawn.
4
Eventually proficient, at least they deemed sufficient.
With various other novices, I was drafted overseas.
Protests being unavailing, we arrived mid bullets hailing
In dugouts on the barren hills of old Gallipoli.
5
Though the elements were salubrious, hospitality was dubious.
The occupying natives showed our absence was required.
They absolutely told us, they n'eer wanted to behold us.
We should abandon our positions then, before we all expired.
6
Inexperienced authority and imagined superiority
Compelled inferior rankers to hold on tenaciously.
No nutrition that's sustaining, and complete absence of training.
