By Superiors upbraided, by the enemy infiladed,
With machine guns, grenades, and enormous artilery,
The insects most ferocious, and the water most atrocious,
Our lot was indescribable while at Galipoli.
Numerically depleted, and most barbarously treated,
anticipated reinforcements failing to materialize,
No alternative remaining, G. H. Q were entertaining.
Plans for evacuation to forestall complete demise.
Preparation for distruction of materials and construction
Were planned and executed most expediciously,
And mid scenes of desolation lit up by conflagration
We re embarked and bid farewell to old Galipoli.
The parting caused no sorrow, for like Soddom and Gomarrah
A greater den of infamy you scarce could visualise.
For in tendencys homicidal and endeavours suicidal.
Expeditionary forces were supposed to specialise.
Our ship quite overcrowded, slipped out in darkness shrouded,
No Bands or Drums or bugles to alleviate the gloom,
Without the least oration, but in silent meditation
For thousands of our comrades lying rotting in that toomb.
Days and nights of great privations, till at last our destination
We arrived at, quite exhausted, worn out and hungry.
We disembarked at Lemnos, barren, dreary and verminous,
A Greecian island, situated in the Agean sea.
Some time recuperating, no laborious excevating
Like valetudinorians despondent, frail and sad,
Disciplinary relaxation allowed time for meditation
So we leisurely could ponder on experiences we had
