Description

The good chum who died in the big push was Charles' friend, Private George William Williams, 13/280, he died at the village of Serre-lès-Puisieux along with many other men of the East Yorkshire Regiment, in the Battle of the Ancre, one of the last big efforts of the Battle of the Somme.

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF ANNIE M & WILLIAM WILLIAMS ABOVE ADDRESS. A GROCER'S ASSISTANT. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PLAS, ON NOVEMBER 1914. SERVED IN EGYPT. ARRIVED FRANCE 8/03/1916. KILLED IN ACTION 13/11/1916, AGE 22. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WILLIAM. UNMARRIED. HE LEFT FAMILY, BEATRICE, DORIS, EDWARD AND AMY WILLIAMS. LISTED IN THE HOLY TRINITY BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE WITH A MILITARY MEDAL. ALSO RECORDED ON THE ST MARKS STREET MEMORIAL.

In 1911 census, his best friend Charles Verity, born 10 May 1896, a confectioner's messenger, lived with his parents John Edwin (General Lighter Foreman) & Mary Jane Verity at 8 Denmark Grove, Holderness Road, Hull and in Hull in 1920 Charles Verity married Ethel Clifton, the former girlfriend of his best friend George Williams who had died 1916.

In 1939 Register, Charles Verity was a Wharfinger's Foreman and was living with Ethel (Clifton) & 2 sons in Hull Road, Withernsea U.D., Yorkshire
