munition factories Valley Road are going on Two shifts a day of 5 hrs

each instead of night + day as previously all men now engaged on munitions

who obtain works elsewhere are to be released immediately no notice

being necessary. They propose going on short time generally + when

the wages do not amount to 30/- for the current week this has to be

made up to 30/- provided the man has had no time off on his

own account there is also an allowance for unemployment for

both men + women - also for Soldiers on receiving their discharge.

This is going to create a lot of work. Leeds has already turned

the  Newly  offices in City Square into an unemployment

exchange & Bradford has taken part of the Church Institute

for the same purpose. I was in Leeds yesterday & heard that it

was the governments intention to send the home army for

garrison duty overseas. I cannot say whether this is correct or

not but Mr. Hartford told me that he knows of service

men who have been sent back to Civil Employment on  Marston's

who have been called back to their units put into uniform &

then received 14 days leave with instructoins to report for

garrison duties over seas. I should not be surprised if this does

not go very much farther that it appears at the moment as

Lord Cruzon said on Wednesday there will be a million

unemployed when the next few week & to me it appears

the Munition Worker will register at the Labour Exchange for

Unemployment benefit. The soldier will register as having a

situation awaiting for him at home (This will be enquired into by

a local advisory committee) what more natural than the unemployed

munition work  of military age changing places with the Soldier

who has a situation open for him so be careful to request

immediately you have a chance.
