CIVIC JUSTICE

Is it too much to hope that we (Inde-pendents) as a body may rise to the height of this great opportunity, and proclaim with unfaltering voice the prin-

ciple of thw equal moral obligations of both sexes, and at the same time to assert that as the Independents of the seventeenth

century concenmed all civil disabilities im-

posed for difference of religious belief, so

the Independents of the nineteenth century condemn all civil disabilities imposed for differences of sex? Whatever we may do in this matter, this is the next great word of civilization. The triumph of civic justice over the disabilities of sex has still to be won. The great word of the French Revolution, "the career open to all who are capable," has still to be applied to one-half colour-blind as to sex. Nothing short of this affords any logical halting-ground. The only test that a Christian democracy can recognize is that of individual capacity and indi-vidual character. At Naseby we affirmed the duty of the State to be just even to heretics. Gettysburg tough the same lesson as to the right of man to justice even though his skin were black. We meet to-day to enunciate the third great formula of our Christian civilization, that liberty, justice, and citizenship are the common and inalienable rights of all human beings, even though they should happen to be women
