Dear Father
I Left Leeds for York with about 60 Recruits by the 1-15
Train + had some Tea at the Buffet Bar York Station + then
went to Fulfrid Barracks to report and they had us standing
about till 6.30 pm. before we could go out without getting
any tea so when we went out we where very hungry + went
to the YMCA for something to eat + then back to Barracks
for 9-30 pm Bed & wood 4 Blankets + Sleep in your pants
+ stocking or be starved Rise + breakfast + slice of bread 1"
thick + some potatoes mashed Cold. + washing up water
to drink you can excuse all this by the number of chaps
who where coming daily at all hours
Then we had to wait about untill our name was called
again loitering about all day not Knowing
what to dowhether you had to go away that day or not I can
tell you that it is harder than working 9 1/2 hrs because
you do not get 1/4 enough to eat. Tuesday was nearly the same
coceep that when we left we got some Rations which consisted of 2
pieces of bread as hard as steel + Bully Beef Bread about 2"
cubes. He arrived at Charlton Park at 7 pm + got some bed
lukets Beds same as at York except that it was colder rise
same time + do just the same The food is not bad here but
you could eat as much for one meal as they give you in one
day No doubt you will remember that I could not eat Rabbit
at home but here we had them for 2 dinners + I can tell you that
I ate them + could have eaten the cork too or anything else this
life makes you very hungry On Wednesday afternoon I went on
Test + got good for my Work Thursday Courtesy about when I
was out on fatigue which was long as there where a lot of chaps
with nothing to do. Friday I went before The Board of Licide +
Medical Office to When I showed that I had from Lieut Newby
to the officer he said he was sorry because the SWD where full
except for Smiths with about 20 to 30 years experience so he posted
me to the M T + said I would have to go through another Last at
Grove Park
