The first British officer to land in Gallipoli was

dropped over board a war ship, to light decoys

on the shore so as to deceive the Turks as to

where the landing was to be. It was frosty

weather. It was the dead of night. He was hatted

& painted black. He swam in the dark

water, pushing a raft before him, with the

decoys on it. Firing from guns were

going on all around him and it was a

two hours swim. He did it. He landed

he crawled through the scrub to listen to

the enemy talk. The enemies were so near

that he could have shaken hands with them

He lit his decoys & swam back to the ship

another 2 hours in the dark sea - with

firing going on all the time.

Colonel Freberg was this hero, of

Gallipoli.
