.following text written on a colourful sketch picture of a Dispatch-rider
Arnold Bennett,
August 6, 1914
An officer came
yesterday to compain of
a fox terrier (ours?)
which flew at dispatch-
riders on motor bicycles.
He said it would be shot
if found loose. These
dispatch-riders are the
most picturesque feature
of the war. They rush
through the village at
speeds which are said
to be up to 50 miles
an hour. I am willing to
concede 40.
