John William Harry Beechey
"Uncle Jack"
Service Number K/16587 (PO)
Born August 13 1894
Died June 5 aged 22 years
Jack was the eldest son of William Henry and Annie
Beechey (nee Appleby) of 39 South View, Grove Street,
Wantage. Jack was born in Windsor, Berkshire and on
leaving school became a milkman. He joined the Royal
Navy in 1912 when he was just 18 years old, as a
second-class stoker. He was made first class stoker in
October 1913. From his service records he served on
various ships including Victory II, Iron Duke, Renown,
Edgar, Queen Mary, Europa and the Hampshire.
He joined the Hampshire in June 1914. We think the
Hampshire was at the Battle of Jutland where it received
light damage after it rammed and sunk a U-Boat. The
ship returned to Scapa Flow, East of the Orkney Islands.
We have some information told by the Electrical
Artificer, Fred Foxton, on HMS Caroline. He records
that they had "just returned to Scapa Flow from patrol
that morning (June 5th) and told to sling hammocks. The
order was countermanded and they put to sea again with
HMS Royalist and two screening destroyers, HMS
Hampshire with Lord Kitchener on board left Scapa
Flow for Russia. (The rumour was that they were going
to rescue the Tsar). She went to the westward of the
Orkneys and Shetlands, while HMS Caroline and HMS
Royalist with there destroyers went to the eastward of the
Islands. The weather was atrocious and the
