May 1st Plymouth Sound. on board SS/Anchises
Have been here since Sunday.
On Sunday we (the D.U.S. 327) came on board
on Monday we dropped down to the present
anchorage to await orders to start. Many tales
or rumours of submarines. All the morning busy
with getting of life belts on the men etc. afternoon ditto
Visited Plymouth for a few hours in the
morning purchased some boots with open soles
as the decks make my feet burn in leather soles.
Bought also some cigarettes as none are provided
on board being under bond the customs not
yet having liberated the supplies for board
from land this day wrote my last letter to Jack
God blesher.
May 2. Had a letter from Gladys which has bucked me up quite
a lot We had every hope of getting off today to
luck with the submarines who are waiting for us but
about 9 o'clock a port they came with a semaphore
to the various boats in the convoy their time for
