wasis, and remainsed.Beyond the high walls of the garden, can be seen
but one minaret, white against a group of giant
cypress trees; the silence is broken only by the
murmuring of doves in the fig tree, distant but
vaucous chattering of jackdaws in the cypress; and at
sunset the voice of the blind muezzin from the
minaret calling the faithful to prayer.
The voice rises and dies away, floating over the
town is taken up in faint echoes from the other
mosques below, then ceases altogether; the rustle of
hurrying footsteps in the paved streets shows that the
call has been heard, and answered -
