managed to drink 2 or 3 cups of t before they cam page fold
with fresh tea & eggs & bacon! What a breakfast!
Nothing was ever so good as that tea, and after a bit
they began to realize our plight & went off to get beds
ready, while we sat in the sun, past caring what
happened next. Then the Colonel found us - such a
dear, with a twinkle, & lots of intuition - & he soon
saw to it that we got to bed - & bless his heart he went
off and brought two soft khaki linen handkerchiefs
drenched in delicious scent, that, after ones own
smoky, black little wipe, wast the last word in bliss
just then. Richardson slept the sleep of the just and
I lay and revelled in that cool pocket hanky.
Someone brought us some lunch later on, bulky beef I
think but it was food for the gods, and lemonade,
nectar if ever there was any. After that we got
up & had tea with the matron, & a car turned up
with a lot of our belongings, & the Colonel took us
into his jolly little mud hut, & then a Bosch aero-
-plane came over & was fired at, & then we went
for a stroll with the Colonel & he sang Albert Chevalier
songs, & really I think he saved the situation for both of us!
Next day Richardson went off to the motors she had
come down to register etc. I was put up for another night
in the Hospital, still separated from all my belongings so that I
had to camp on in the old grimy clothes of the fire, but the
Colonel planned a delightful afternoon & took a huge
