24th August, 1915.

Dear Gerty,

This is a very painful duty I have to perform and I have chosen you

as being better able to bear up under the shock than would your Father

or Mother, and Because I know you will be able to impart to them this

information better than I could in my abrupt way.

I am very sorry to say that Walter was killed in action on Saturday

21st August. Our Brigade charged the Turks about 3.30 p.m. and during

the advance Walter, my best chum, was shot in the neck, right through the

jungler vein, his life blood poured forth as from a fountain, he reeled,

and immediately got another through the brain, which made death

instantaneous and this causing him no pain or death agony, and how I feel

now, but you understand.

Now, Gerty, please forgive me for choosing you as the recipient of

this letter, and believe me in very deepest regret.

George. E. Rogan

P.S. I can't write any more, under the circumstances do I think any

more would intrest you. If you should care for any further information

say so, and I will endeavour to give it you as far as the Censor will

allow.
